Nursing Philosophy & Professional Outlook
N314: Principles of Practice: Foundational Concepts
Purpose
This project provides the junior level student with an opportunity to define his/her philosophy of nursing in the early phases of education and professionalization. In the spirit of life-long learning inherent to the practice of nursing, the student will also explore and describe his/her goals for higher-level nursing education. As required for the Senior year portfolio, the student can use this project to look back and reflect upon the values, understandings, ambiguities, and personal experiences that have changed or held steadfast throughout his/her undergraduate nursing education and their influence on the transition to the professional nurse role.
Student Approach
This paper helped me to create my own philosophy of nursing as a first-year nursing student. It also motivated me to think about my future plans and goals. I learned that nursing practice is more than just healing physical illness. Nursing practice is holistic and encompasses the patient’s mind, body, spirit, emotion, and environment.
Reason for Inclusion
I included this assignment to highlight my growth throughout nursing school. This paper serves as my initial philosophy of nursing and can be reflected back upon in the future. It also includes my education goals and professional outlook. The following objective was met through this assignment:
-
Critical Thinking
-
Uses nursing and other appropriate theories and models to guide professional practice.
-
Example: I included Hildegard Peplau’s Theory of Interpersonal Relations to emphasize the importance of treating patients as partners. I discuss how a good rapport between a nurse and patient can foster a relationship that can promote health and facilitate learning.
