Pediatric Grand Rounds Oral Presentation

N421: Clinical Management of Children of the FAMILY

Purpose
To provide the student an opportunity to integrate knowledge from the sciences, developmental theory and physical assessment data to the care of a pediatric patient and family in the acute care setting.  The student will utilize critical thinking and independent judgments in presenting a holistic plan of care in a formal oral presentation.

Student Approach
The Pediatric Grand Rounds presentation provided me the opportunity to present holistic nursing care for an 8-week-old infant diagnosed with micrognathia who was awaiting surgery for mandibular distractors. Through this assignment, I was able to showcase nursing care that considered age, developmental stage, and patient supports systems. I learned that nursing care is not one-size-fits-all and should be adjusted accordingly based on thorough consideration of a patient’s individual needs and stage of life.

Reason for Inclusion
The inclusion of this assignment demonstrates my ability to consider comprehensive factors and provide holistic care for a pediatric patient. The following objectives were met through this assignment:

  • Nursing Practice

    • Implements traditional nursing care practices as appropriate to provide holistic health care to diverse populations across the lifespan.

      • Example: My patient was an 8-week-old newborn who was provided with comprehensive nursing care. A physical assessment was able to guide basic nursing practice. However, to provide holistic care, factors such as the patient’s support system and stage of development, had to be considered. Educating the patient’s guardian about post-operative treatment was also part of holistic nursing practice.

  • Communication

    • Expresses oneself and communicates effectively with diverse groups and disciplines using a variety of media

      • Example: I orally presented this Pediatric Grand Rounds assignment to my peers and clinical instructor through the use of digital media and Google Slides

  • Teaching

    • Provides relevant and sensitive health education information and counseling to patients, and families, in a variety of situations and settings.

      • Example: Included in the presentation is the education that the patient’s guardian would need the following mandible distraction surgery. This included post-surgery care that will be carried out by the healthcare team at the hospital, at-home care that the family must help carry out, and future follow-up treatments.

    • Uses information technologies and other appropriate methods to communicate health promotion, risk reduction, and disease prevention across the lifespan.

      • Example: I utilized digital media and Google Slides to present information to my peers and clinical instructor about health promotion, risk reduction, and disease prevention for a newborn scheduled to have mandible distraction surgery. The beforestated factors were included in patient education. Patient education is a tool for health promotion and proper education following surgery can reduce the risk of complications and further diseases.

  • Research

    • Shares research findings with colleagues.

      • Example: In this presentation, I included two research findings relevant to the patient. One study concluded that a newborn and infant’s imitation behaviors are associated with social, cognitive, and language development. The second study concluded that family functioning can be improved by resolving a parent’s substance abuse issue through therapy. This information was relayed to my peers and clinical instructor.

  • Leadership

    • Assumes a leadership role within ones’ scope of practice as a designer and manager, and coordinator of health care to meet the special needs of populations.

      • Examples: I cared for a newborn patient and had the opportunity to act as a designer, manager, and coordinator of health care by creating a nursing plan of care for the patient that was based on assessment data and holistic considerations such as family and developmental stage. The plan also included expected outcomes and interventions to achieve those outcomes. I was also able to create a teaching plan for the patient’s family following surgery. l instructor through the use of digital media and Google Slides.
